Plastic Film Quality Testing in Manufacturing: How It Works
Plastic film quality testing helps confirm that a material meets the specifications customers rely on, from strength and flexibility to clarity, color, thickness, and end-use performance.
At Achilles USA, quality is built into the process from the start. We have been manufacturing plastic film since 1973, producing custom PVC and co-extruded multilayer films with capabilities that include calendering, extrusion, lamination, and slitting. Testing connects those manufacturing capabilities to the requirements of each application.
Why Plastic Film Quality Testing Matters?
A film can look fine on a roll and still fall short in use. Variations in thickness, strength, surface properties, or flexibility can affect how the material performs during converting, fabrication, or service.
Testing helps catch these variations early, maintain consistency, and confirm that the film meets the agreed specifications.
For buyers, this matters because every application has different demands. A medical film, an industrial curtain, and an outdoor cover may each require a different balance of mechanical strength, optical properties, flexibility, and environmental resistance. The testing program should reflect those differences.
Plastic Film Quality Testing at Achilles USA
During development and production, Achilles USA can evaluate a wide range of film properties. Our quality lab measures and evaluates materials using applicable ASTM and Federal test methods, along with other application-specific standards.
The following categories organize our testing capabilities by the properties they help assess.
Hardness and Stiffness
Hardness and stiffness influence how a film feels, handles, and responds to force. Our capabilities include:
Shore A and Shore D durometer testing for material hardness.
Clark stiffness testing to evaluate resistance to bending.
These evaluations help customers define the right balance of flexibility and rigidity for their application.
Color, Clarity, and Optical Performance
Optical testing evaluates how film looks and how it interacts with light. Our capabilities include spectrophotometer measurements and other optical evaluations for:
Color difference and opacity.
Haze, clarity, and total light transmittance.
Gloss.
UV blocking and UV reflection.
These properties matter for applications where visibility, appearance, light transmission, or UV protection is part of the product specification.

Mechanical Strength and Handling
Mechanical testing evaluates how the film responds to stretching, tearing, puncturing, and contact with surfaces. Our capabilities include:
Tensile strength, elongation, and Young’s modulus, including ASTM D882 testing where applicable.
Graves tear and Elmendorf tear.
Puncture resistance.
Coefficient of friction (CoF).
Together, these tests help characterize how a film may behave during processing, installation, and use. Different tests answer different questions, so the selection depends on the stresses the finished product will encounter.
Environmental Resistance and Durability
Environmental and durability testing helps evaluate how a material responds to its intended conditions of use. Our capabilities include:
Xenon arc and UV weathering exposure.
Cold-temperature and cold-impact testing.
Dimensional stability.
Soil burial.
Water extraction and volatility.
Hydrostatic burst pressure.
These evaluations support material selection for applications exposed to sunlight, cold temperatures, moisture, or other demanding conditions.
Dimensions and Physical Properties
Dimensional and physical measurements help confirm that the film meets its specified construction and material requirements. Our capabilities include:
Thickness measurement.
Width and other dimensional checks.
Specific gravity.
Controlling these properties supports consistent material performance and helps customers keep their downstream processes within specification.
Surface Properties and Converting Performance
A film must work not only in the finished product but also during printing, bonding, laminating, and fabrication. Our capabilities include:
Surface tension.
Surface and volume resistance.
Surface roughness.
Printability.
Peel strength and bondability.
These evaluations help determine whether a film’s surface and bonding characteristics are suitable for the customer’s process.
Flammability and Fire Performance
When an application has specific flammability requirements, testing must align with the relevant method and acceptance criteria. Achilles USA offers on-site testing capabilities for:
NFPA 701.
CPAI-84.
Applicable CSFM requirements.
MVSS 302.
We also work with third-party laboratories for additional testing needs.
In-Line Defect Inspection
Laboratory testing is one part of the quality process. Achilles USA also uses automated in-line inspection systems on every manufacturing line to continuously monitor defects.
These systems support defect control during production and complement the property measurements and evaluations performed in the lab.
How Testing Fits Into Manufacturing
Testing does not happen only after a roll is finished. At Achilles USA, it supports development, production, and lot verification.
1. Define the Application Requirements
The process starts with understanding what the film needs to do. Target thickness, flexibility, color, strength, optical properties, and environmental exposure help guide formulation and testing decisions.
2. Develop and Evaluate the Material
Achilles USA formulates and compounds its own films. This allows our teams to adjust the material and evaluate whether it meets the project’s performance targets.
3. Monitor Production
During manufacturing, in-line inspection and quality checks help identify variation and support consistency throughout each lot. Mixing, compounding, and processing controls work alongside testing to help reduce defects.
4. Verify the Finished Lot
Final checks help confirm that the finished material meets the agreed specifications before shipment. The required tests depend on the product, customer requirements, and intended application.
Matching Tests to Real-World Use
A useful testing program focuses on the conditions the film will actually face.
For an outdoor cover, UV weathering and cold-temperature performance may be priorities. For a clear industrial curtain, optical properties, flexibility, and dimensional consistency may matter more. A film intended for printing or lamination may need closer evaluation of surface tension, printability, or bond strength.
Achilles USA can evaluate suitable formulations for temperatures down to -60°F and offers weathering evaluations to support short- and long-term outdoor applications. The appropriate test conditions and performance targets depend on the specific formulation and end use.
The goal is not to run every available test. The goal is to select tests that provide useful evidence for the application.
Understanding Standards and Compliance
Standards give manufacturers and customers a shared way to define test procedures and compare results. Depending on the property and application, testing may follow ASTM, DIN, Federal, military, or other specified methods.
It is important to distinguish between a test result and a broader compliance claim. Testing a material to a particular method does not automatically establish that every finished product made from it meets all applicable requirements.
Agreeing on the test method, sample conditions, and acceptance criteria early helps keep material development and qualification focused.
What Buyers Should Ask a Plastic Film Supplier
When sourcing plastic film, ask questions that connect the supplier’s testing capabilities to your product requirements:
Which properties will be tested for my application?
What test methods and acceptance criteria will be used?
Which checks happen in-line, in the lab, or through a third party?
How is consistency evaluated throughout a production lot?
Can the formulation be adjusted if the initial material does not meet the target?
What test results or supporting documentation are available?
These conversations help clarify expectations before production begins and reduce the risk of discovering a performance gap later.
Custom Film, Supported by Testing
At Achilles USA, testing is part of custom film manufacturing, not a separate step at the end. By connecting formulation, processing, in-line inspection, and laboratory evaluation, we help customers develop films suited to their application requirements.
From thickness and color to mechanical strength and environmental resistance, the objective is the same: a film that performs as specified.
